The goal to love God is accomplished, in part, by openly confessing all the idols in our heart. Both to God in prayer, and to other believers. Resist the lie that sin will fulfill us, and resist the compulsion to work for the darkness in our heart.
What turns our love away from God are all the things we think will give us satisfaction, but won't. Our hearts chase money and possesions. We chase fame and sex. We chase food and comfort. We chase pride and accomplishment. All these things will satisfy us for a short time, but they have no lasting affect. So they take our affection away from God, and in return we're left empty or depraved. The Bible refers to all these things as idols.
By openly confessing the idols in our heart God heals us from the hold they have over our life.
